  1. The Bingo Report: Mandatory Celibacy and Clergy Sexual Abuse Paperback – Unabridged, October 20, 2005 by Louise Haggett (Author), Bob Land (Editor), Cheryl Carrington (Illustrator) Groundbreaking scientific study of the subculture of Roman Catholic Priests and of clergy sexual abuse victims conducted prior to the 2002 public clergy abuse revelations, which correlations led to a 2004 literary study on intense loneliness and lack of intimacy in the priesthood. Uncovered in the Priest Study (1997): 1) Priests that with conflicting attitudes and behaviors that did not match; 2) Priests that were extremely lonely and suffered from lack of intimacy, and; 3) According to priest respondents, a hierarchy that ignored dysfunctional sexual activity unless it became public knowledge. Uncovered in the Victim Study (1999): 1) Victim and priest perpetrator profiles that were significantly different from child sexual abuse victims and perpetrators among the general population; 2)While adolescent boys (i.e., altar servers) were primary targets for priests (93%),adult victims over 20 years old were primarily female (94.5%), ruling out a possible homosexual factor among abusing priests, and; 3) Victims, as angry as they were, retrospectively indicated that priests were lonely, linking with the priest study. Sociological tables with chi squares of .000 and .001 emphasize the Bingo! findings effect an AHA! Moment in Catholic clergy sexual abuse. It also includes a bibliography of over 150 titles, mostly researched prior to 2002 when the public and news media were still in denial. Editorial Reviews Review"...exceedingly well organized and professionally presented--an impressive accomplishment." --Kathleen Kautzer, PhD, Sociology Chair, Regis College, MA "It is written in a way that did not trigger my emotions as a survivor of Catholic clergy abuse." --Kay Goodnow, MO, clergy sexual abuse survivor "I am very impressed by the depth of the study. It is important and deserves to be widely read." --The Rev. Jansen String, Episcopal priest, MD The Bingo Report is a very effectively researched work of sociology, and is put together in a way that makes it easy to find information. The work is both highly informative and a useful book on which to base more argumentative books, with its many studies and citations. The references and suggestions for further research also make it a great starting point for futurre textual responses. Haggett's book is a very important work, and I hope she will continue to produce such well researched material in the future, if it is as strong as The Bingo Report. 4 stars out of 5. --Writer's Digest "I am very impressed by the depth of the study. It is important and deserves to be widely read." --The Rev. Jansen String, Episcopal priest, MD About the AuthorLouise Haggett is a lifelong mainstream Catholic, a wife, a mother and a grandmother who in 1991 began a series of discoveries regarding the subculture of the Roman Catholic priesthood that would change her life forever. Married priests in the church, secretly married priests; priests in sexual relationships, the church hiding the fact that priests got married; married priests being blackballed to prevent their employment; the church suggesting to some that they have affairs instead of leaving to marry; and even more horrific, priests sexually abusing children. All this while the church denied that sexual abuse was occurring. In the midst of a critical and growing priest shortage, my church was dominating priests by manipulating the public image of their sexual lives: officially celibate, privately engaging in a full spectrum of function and dysfunctional sexual behaviors. The church was controlling the sex lives of priests and controlling of the image of the church. For five years, Haggett tried to get others to research what she could not research herself, to no avail. In 1996, Haggett gave up a lucrative career to return to college. The results are The Bingo Report, published in 2005.
